Optimizing Legacy SQL Infrastructure for High-Volume Fintech Transaction Processing
By Syed Ahmed Basharat Ali.
Replaced slow legacy materialized views with partitioned, indexed tables so transaction reports and lookups stopped timing out.
Challenge
Legacy SQL materialized views and views were causing performance bottlenecks in a fintech environment processing high daily transaction volumes. Slow queries were delaying financial operations, and some critical transaction reports took hours to generate.
Approach
- Analyzed existing materialized views and found bottlenecks through query execution plans and database profiling.
- Designed partitioning based on business logic: time-based partitions for transaction history and hash partitioning for high-frequency data.
- Separated hot (recent) and cold (historical) transaction data with an archiving strategy.
- Refactored complex materialized views into optimized tables with proper indexing.
- Automated partition maintenance and added monitoring dashboards for ongoing performance tracking.
- Set data retention policies aligned with financial compliance requirements.
Results
- Faster transaction-related reports and real-time transaction lookups.
- Fewer timeout errors on user queries and a smaller storage footprint after archiving.
Technologies
Oracle SQL, Talend.
Impact
Transaction queries and financial reporting became faster and more reliable, on a structure designed to handle growing volume.
