Building Comprehensive Ops Database for Terminal Performance Monitoring and Fee Collection Optimization
By Syed Ahmed Basharat Ali.
A centralized operations database that tracks payment-terminal health and fee collection, so malfunctioning terminals and uncollected fees are caught early.
Challenge
The company was losing revenue because malfunctioning payment terminals failed to charge collection fees correctly. Without centralized monitoring across thousands of terminals, failures went undetected and fees went uncollected.
Approach
- Designed a database architecture that centralizes terminal performance data across all locations.
- Built monitoring tables for terminal health, transaction success rates and fee collection status.
- Built automated ingestion pipelines for terminal logs, transaction data and performance metrics.
- Added alerts and dashboard views that surface underperforming terminals and fee collection failures.
- Implemented validation and integrity checks for fee calculation and collection tracking.
- Created historical reporting tables for trend analysis and maintenance scheduling, and automated remediation workflows that open maintenance requests for failing terminals.
Results
- Terminal failures and fee collection gaps detected proactively instead of after the fact.
- Uncollected fees recovered through more accurate fee collection, with less manual monitoring.
Technologies
Oracle SQL, Talend.
Impact
Terminal operations moved from reactive to proactive, with one monitoring system as the base for operational decisions.
